The north-east corner of Scotland holds some of Britain's most rewarding walking country: the White Mounth plateau above Loch Muick, the granite tor of the Mither Tap rising above the Don valley, the ancient Caledonian pines of Glen Tanar, the long Lochnagar ridge catching the first and last light of the day. Yet for many people in Aberdeenshire and beyond, that same landscape can feel just out of reach — not for want of desire or fitness, but for want of a group to go with, a route graded honestly, or a programme that accounts for the fact that offshore rotations don't follow calendar weekends. Cairnvost Howe - Sigma exists to close that gap. We run a year-round programme of carefully graded Sunday outings, monthly hill-skills evenings in community halls from Stonehaven to Huntly, and a dedicated sub-programme for energy and shift workers whose home time arrives in unpredictable blocks. Every outing is led by trained, experienced volunteers who know these hills in all weathers; every skills session is built around what walkers in this region actually need to know. We are not a racing club or a tick-list organisation. We are a community of people who love the eastern Cairngorms, Royal Deeside and Bennachie, and who believe that love should be as widely shared as possible.

Graded Sunday Outings

From easy glen-floor walks along the Water of Tanar to full Munro days on the Lochnagar ridge, our Sunday programme covers every ability with honest, consistent grading. Leaders hold groups to a maximum of twelve so every outing stays sociable, unhurried and safe.

Hill-Skills Evenings

Monthly indoor sessions in community venues across Aberdeenshire cover map and compass work, weather reading, kit selection and emergency protocols — practical skills taught by people who use them in these exact hills every week. No previous experience required.

Rotation-Friendly Scheduling

We know that offshore and energy workers don't have predictable weekends, so our rolling booking system stays open until Thursday before each Sunday walk and our Rotation Ready members receive a three-week forward schedule every Monday morning. A fortnight at home can include four outings without planning a month in advance.

Our mission

Cairnvost Howe - Sigma exists to make the eastern Cairngorms, Royal Deeside and the Bennachie hills genuinely accessible to people of all abilities, ages and working patterns across the north-east of Scotland — providing graded, leader-led outings, practical hill-skills education, and a welcoming, non-competitive community in which every walker, from first-timer to experienced hill-goer, can find their level, build their confidence safely, and belong to something larger than a solo day on the hill.
